Morphology, Memory and the Mental Lexicon
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent experimental evidence on morphological learning and processing has prompted a less deterministic and modular view of the interaction between stored word knowledge and on-line processing. Storing a word in the mental lexicon does not simply entail keeping a faithful memory image of that word in the most compact way. It also requires encoding and manipulating such image through topological structures that are optimally adapted to word production and comprehension. Temporal Self-Organizing Maps (THSOMs) are a novel model of artificial neural network that keeps time serial information through predictive activation chains of receptors encoding both spatial and temporal information of input stimuli. The impact of this model on issues of lexical organization and morphological processing is investigated in detail through a series of simulations shedding light on the dynamics between short-term memory (activation), long-term memory (learning) and morphological organization of stored word forms (topology).

Modeling storage and retrieval of memories in the brain
We have proposed a neural network model that stores the incoming information after orthogonalizing it in the same manner as vectors are orthogonalized. The scheme enables the brain to compare a new informational system with those in the memory and store its similarities and differences with the old memories in an economical manner. This allows the brain to have an enormous capacity and yet the ...

متن کاملImam Sadegh’s (AS) Hadiths in Sunni’s lexicon
The Quran and Hadiths including Infallibles (AS) Hadiths such as Imam Sadegh (AS) were one of compilation references, and also, one of the fields of research for Arabs morphologists from long time ago. Imam Sadegh’s (AS) Hadiths based on Sunni’s lexicon, and then, based on another Islamic science books will be illustrated in this research in order to identify where these Hadiths hav...
متن کاملMental Representation of Cognates/Noncognates in Persian-Speaking EFL Learners
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mental representation of cognate and noncognate translation pairs in languages with different scripts to test the prediction of dual lexicon model (Gollan, Forster, & Frost, 1997). Two groups of Persian-speaking English language learners were tested on cognate and noncognate translation pairs in Persian-English and English-Persian directions with...
متن کاملPsycho-computational Issues in Morphology Learning and Processing: an Overture
The basic psycholinguistic question in Morphology learning and processing is whether morphologically complex forms are stored in long-term memory or rather composed “on-line” in working memory from stored constituents. A third logical possibility is that long-term storage and on-line processing do in fact compete in word acquisition and comprehension. Over the past several years, the three hypo...
